The patient has the right to participate voluntarily & consent to treatment unless the patient has been ordered by the court. The patient should understand & agree to treatment & have the right to object or terminate treatment.

Will therapy be confidential?

Confidentiality is imperative between a client and a therapist. Successful therapy needs trust with delicate subject matter usually not discussed anywhere else but in the therapist's office. Therapists provide a written copy of their confidential disclosure agreement, and you can be assured that what you discuss in session will not be shared. Occasionally, however, you may want your therapist to share knowledge with others in your healthcare team (Nurse, physician, etc.), although by law, your therapist cannot release any information without written permission.

Nonetheless, state law and professional ethics require therapists to have confidentiality, excluding the consecutive situations:

  • Suspected present, past abuse or the neglect of children, adults, and elders to the authorities, including law enforcement and child protection, and based on information provided by the client or collateral resources.

  • If the therapist has reason to assume the client is in danger of hurting themselves or harming someone else.
